JumpFm is an open source electron based file explorer. It could finally be the solution for a free, standalone and full featured cross-platform file explorer. Together with other electron based apps like Atom and Hyper it shares some ideas. It is very well thought-out and its default theme its quite beautiful. Even in this early stage it has some very useful features like:

Jumping function
Git awareness
Plugin support
Filtering
Flat Mode
Instant Gist

The keyboard shortcuts are entirely configurable, but JumpFm lacks mouse control for now. The settings stored in ordinary json files, though there are not that many settings yet. Like other electron based apps it has plugin support, which is nice, because features can be added and implement individually. At the time you are reading this: maybe JumpFm has gained considerably more functionality. Maybe you should jump over to JumpFm and contribute?

Electron Apps are pretty resource hungry, they are pretty bad applications for crossplatform development. You can do and promote better alternatives with technologies like Proton, QT or Lazarus.

JumpFM 1.0.5 from 2017 (AppImage) does not run on Ubuntu 20.04 (Harfbuzz version too old).

Can't switch between drives. Works well as an explorer for project folders but not as a replacement for Windows Explorer.

What is JumpFm?

JumpFm is a minimalistic dual panel file manager (currently released only for Windows, Mac, and Linux) that lets you navigate your file system very efficiently. Mac releases can be found at https://github.com/heywoodlh/jumpfm Windows build is not tested yet, so use at your own risk. JumpFm is an Electron based app. It is written in TypeScript. To hack the code all you need is node.js a decent editor and a sass compiler.

Features • Jumping: Press j to jump directly to your favorites folders. No manual bookmarking is needed, JumpFm will learn where you want to go. • Git Awareness: Files are displayed according to thier git status. • Plugins: Powerful plugin system based on NPM. • Flat Mode: Press r and all directories are gone. Press it again to bring them back. • Instant Gist: Press ctrl + g to create instant gist from selected files.
