RotorCrypt X-Files is a Windows encryption program built to protect files and folders. It works fully offline: no cloud, no external server, and no account required — everything happens locally on your device.
At its core is the Vault, a digital safe where files and folders are automatically encrypted in three independent layers, a level of protection that can't realistically be broken with current or foreseeable computing power. An optional fourth layer is available for extra security. Inside the Vault, files behave like a normal folder — double-click to open and edit, and the file re-encrypts itself the moment you close it. Whole folders move in and out just as easily as single files. Everything inside is stored under randomized, identical-looking names, so even someone browsing the Vault folder directly can't tell what's inside or what anything is called. A one-click privacy screen hides the entire Vault instantly, and an adjustable auto-lock kicks in after inactivity. Deletion uses a military-grade multi-pass wipe, not a simple file removal that could still be recovered.
RotorCrypt X-Files can also encrypt individual files as RCX files, meant for one specific, confirmed contact. Before this works, both sides complete a one-time handshake that verifies each other as trusted contacts — after that, no password is needed to decrypt, because trust is already established. Only that one recipient can ever open the file. Any tampering is caught immediately and decryption is refused. Unlike encrypted text messages, which can only be opened once, an RCX file can be decrypted as many times as needed, for as long as that contact exists — remove the contact, and the file becomes permanently inaccessible.
For sending to people who don't have the software at all, RotorCrypt X-Files can package encrypted content as a self-extracting EXE — no separate app needed on their end. You can set it to expire automatically after a chosen date, and it deletes itself after five wrong password attempts.
Under the hood, RotorCrypt X-Files builds on the same foundation as RotorCrypt X, taken further: up to 100 rotors at 65,535 characters each, combined with AES-256-GCM and modern key derivation. Every algorithm used is scientifically vetted and widely trusted: Argon2id, AES-256, ChaCha20, SHA3-256, and a modernized rotor cipher. Key exchange between contacts uses ECDH over X25519, tampering is caught via AES-GCM combined with HMAC-SHA256, and deletion follows the DoD 5220.22-M standard.
