Comments and Reviews

Comment summary: Todoist earns praise for its clean, fast, cross-platform interface, natural-language task entry, recurring tasks, gamification, collaboration, integrations—especially Google Calendar—and useful organization features. Users consistently criticize weak keyboard-only navigation, limited bulk actions and customization, missing or inconvenient export/import, and a shrinking free tier that restricts reminders, projects, filters, and other features. Several also consider Premium expensive for its pace of feature development.

As a guy with absolute shit memory, I've been using Todoist free version in browser and on my smartphone for about 3 years because of how easy it is to use and I'll keep using it in the future, but apart from everything working for a todo list way, it has a few things I would love to be implemented but aren't:

  • more and better keyboard shortcuts
  • more features and tracking capabilities
  • easier handling with keyboard only
  • more functions that even the simplest text editors have nowadays

The paid version doesn't really solve the above issues, right now it just adds labels/tags and notifications if you pay fully, which are nice to have but not essential.

Altough, what it does it does really well for a TODO list in its design:

  • it shows the timeline of the next days visible to you
  • this makes it easy to drag and drop things to reschedule
  • has support for recurring tasks
  • has support for priorities
  • has support for dates
  • has support for natural language scheduling of tasks (like "take out trash on sunday", and he knows to put "take out trash" on Sunday)
  • it's the fastest app I tried to add and manage your tasks (it takes 2 seconds to add a task with a date with the speed I type)

Because of these, I have a custom querry of the next 7 days of my todoist as my Chrome homepage. Very useful to keep me in check.

Note: The latest UI design change was a fun addition.

It's a good todo app, but I want the devs to do more for it to make it godly.

The Premium plan which costs $3 / month and the Business plan which costs $5 / month provide labels and backups, but the Free plan does not. I would prefer not to pay a recurring fee for my to-do list.

The pricing webpage does not say how many tasks that a project can have. Just now, I tried adding a task to my inbox, and I got the error message, "You can add a maximum of 1 task per project with your current plan." One task per project seems unreasonably low. I tried deleting some tasks, but I guess I didn't delete enough because I still get the same error message.

The Backups feature still requires a paid upgrade which costs $48 / year or $5 / month. But I could print and export a to-do list without upgrading. Also, I could not find a Select All menu item, but I could select multiple to-dos with the Shift key [0].

Two things keep me here. Quick capture in plain language, so a task takes three seconds instead of thirty. And shared projects that actually work. My wife and I keep household and business tasks in the same system and updates from either side just show up, no syncing conversation required. The free tier has thinned out over the years and filters being paid still feels off, but I pay for it and do not regret that.

Todoist works really well for managing personal task lists and recurring to-dos.

If someone is looking for less task volume and more clarity around what actually matters each day or week - especially in a team context-tools like northr.ai approach the problem from a different angle, focusing on priorities and alignment rather than lists.
