While AFFiNE is privacy-focused as a standalone product, their AI service raises privacy concerns. The core product without AI is excellent for privacy-conscious users. However, according to their AI terms:
If you're looking for a private alternative to Notion/Miro, use AFFiNE without the AI features. The base product respects privacy, but the AI service doesn't meet privacy-focused standards.
The app is cool and pretty functional, especially for it being in early stages.
HOWEVER, in order to sync your data you have to create an account and use their cloud service. As per their privacy policy they collect and share your name, email address, and phone number, device information, ip address, and gps data.
Open washing, this isnt FOSS. Be aware: https://isitreallyfoss.com/projects/affine/
Affine is good, but not perfect. The Local Setup using Podman was easy. Tough, the backend is poorly designed and low of management and export possibilities. The Frontend is nice, i like it, but on my system the frontend crashed about all 20 minutes. Good it saves all in realtime. What i ve been missing is pixel sizing, grid and flexbox support, predelivered presets of buttons and a way of designling workflow / prototyping.
I'm using joplin with joplin server, I have tested obsidian and appflowy. Affine is the only one who has convinced me ! Easy, open source, easy self hostable, whiteboard with handwriten note. Yeah, it's in dev and all features are not here, but it's usable.
It can't truly be used as open-source software, and is of Chinese origin. Very slow compared to alternatives. Development has been very slow over the years, so it was hype at first, then userbase lost interest.
I like the Split View and the Journal. Had issues getting a template to download/install. You can drag/drop images, but context menu doesn't work in notes, so it's Ctrl-V vs paste. Biggest drawback is no Android App. But AFFiNE offers cloud backup functionalities. From Brave AI: "AFFiNE supports syncing notes and files to cloud storage services like Google Drive, OneDrive, Dropbox, or Nextcloud in an encrypted format."
