I use Paint.NET as my preferred paint tool in Windows. Pixelmator, my favorite on Mac, is a lot better in every way.

Pixelmator pro (that's the icon used here, so I presume we're talking Pixelmator pro and not just good old Pixelmator which also still exists and gets updates) – for an app that has "pro" in its name the workflow is decidedly non-pro. Too much mousing around is required and not enough keyboard shortcuts on which pros heavily rely. Not impressed.

Pixelmator Pro is about the best alternative for Photoshop. It's cheap but very powerful. Highly recommended!

What is Pixelmator?

Pixelmator Pro is an image editor for Mac with over 50 editing tools for designing, editing, drawing, and painting. It includes pro-grade color adjustments, machine learning tools for automatic background removal and photo enhancement, and a repair tool for removing unwanted objects. It supports RAW photos from over 750 digital cameras.

Pixelmator Pro offers over 200 templates for various formats like posters, social media posts, and resumes. It uses layer-based editing, text customization, intelligent object alignment, and over 70 nondestructive effects. Users can also customize layers with styles like Fill, Stroke, Drop Shadow, and Inner Shadow.

The software provides vector design tools, including Pen and Freeform Pen tools, and over 200 pre-designed shapes. It supports the import and export of vector files in SVG and PDF formats. For digital painting, it offers dual-texture brushes and supports graphics tablets for pressure and tilt sensitivity. It uses machine learning for automatic image enhancement and accurate selections.

Pixelmator Pro supports a wide range of image and video formats, including JPEG, TIFF, PNG, PSD, HEIF, SVG, AI, Illustrator EPS, PDF, GIF, BMP, TGA, WebP, JPEG-2000, AVIF, MP4, MOV, and more. It also supports opening and exporting of HDR images and videos, and Adobe Photoshop images with layers.
