Ever wondering about free great open source software to start your idea? Here's a list for you to get started.
Also mentions several rarely known and newer software as well!
Please note that almost none of these alternatives are 1-to-1 replacement with exact some features. Most of these software might have entirely different scope of project.

Professional-ready sketch and painting software with animation capabilities.
For user from
PaintTool SAI, Adobe Photoshop,
MediBang Paint,
ibis Paint X, or
SketchBook, this software have anything you need.
If you're
Clip Studio Paint user, it lacks a lot of unique feature that CSP have. (Especially if you come from professional Japanese manga/animation production pipeline).
Potential CSP features addition such as comic creation utilities (both book and webtoon layout) and sub-tooling are still in dicussion. Krita also does not have flexible windowing system to work on multiple artwork.
For
Expresii and
Rebelle users, there's no realistic water paint emulation yet.
For
openCanvas user, go use
Clip Studio Paint instead (for now, it's paid tho).

Alternative to
Live2D Cubism software suite, for creating live animated character, the one that usually featured in Japanese visual novel (especially galge) and Virtual Youtuber.
Still not as capable to match existing industry standard (still in early development stage). Only recommended if you're merely using it for indie games or Vtuber character.
They also have active Japanese contributors, so it might not too far from what Japanese ACG industry needs.
The dev recently changed their software from free to freemium, as they want to fund the development. It cost 20USD, but you can still "evaluate" it for free with 10 seconds reminder screen at startup.

Image editor software. If you ever tried GIMP five or ten years ago, it might be the best time to revisit GIMP, as it has tons of improvement.
While the software itself is powerful, it requires a little bit of learning, especially if you're coming from Adobe Photoshop,
Affinity Photo, or
Pixelmator.
GIMP 3.0 forward brings a lot of new features and improvement, after more than 10 years of fixing underlying base to be more future proof. Notably: shape tools.
List of supported image format: https://testing.developer.gimp.org/core/standards/images/ (incomplete?)

Pixel art creation software.
Also suitable to create sprite, game asset, or pixel animation. Good alternative to paid software like
Aseprite.
It's not 1-to-1 feature parity, but it has a lot of unique features.

3D creation software suites. Also capable to do video editor and 2D animation, though not as powerful as other specialized software.
It might not be the software used in (several) already established animation, movie, or game development (looking at you,
Autodesk Maya), but it become the new standard for newer studio as they are able to start a new production pipeline.

Vector-based document/image creation software with (sometimes) better feature implementation than existing proprietary alternative. Easy to pick up and learn.
Choose this over Adobe Illustrator if you're beginner.
To note:
Affinity Designer has several unique feature that even any industry standard don't have (I think), but the dev also seems keen to replicate some features from it and other competitor.

Node-based raster and vector software. Built as multi-platform (including web) with Rust. Currently in alpha.
This developer is attempting to make software caters to graphic design, motion graphics, image editing, digital painting, VFX compositing, page layout and printing.

Desktop publishing software.
Good enough for professional usage, but lacking a lot of modern feature and user experience compared to alternative like Adobe InDesign or
Affinity Publisher
If you just want to replace
Microsoft Publisher, that might be enough.

Basic voxel creation software.
MagicaVoxel alternative.
Just like MagicaVoxel, this one is relatively easy to use that even children can use it like a toy.
Though, MV has better interface, and it's also free (though not open source) ...

Collaborative drawing software.
It's suitable for professional tools or community drawing.
Roadmap: https://media.ccc.de/v/lgm25-upstream-2025-83646-state-of-libre-graphics (LGM 2025 event, minute 09:44)

General purpose graphic software, combining raster, vector, and pixel art with node graph support.
Not as powerful as
Pixel Composer yet in terms of pixel art node graph.
Might be a close competitor to
PixelOver as well (?)

Oriedita is a computer program used for drawing origami crease patterns. It comes with a wide range of tools to help you draw crease patterns.

Fontforge is a free Typeface (font) editor program for Windows, Mac OS X and GNU+Linux and is localized in several languages.

Draw lets you produce anything from a quick sketch to a complex plan, and gives you the means to communicate with graphics and diagrams. With a maximum page size of 300cm by 300cm, Draw is a an excellent package for producing technical drawings, general posters, and much else.

Adobe Flash-alike animation and game development software.
Fork of
Wick Editor
It was inspired by
Scratch, so they based on design as easy-to-use as possible. Even for the children.

Alternative to
SketchBook
In my opinion, this software can be developed to be more of
Rebelle and
Expresii , as it has user interface that serve similar audience.

PaintTool SAI clone for Linux.
If Krita and GIMP feels too bloated, while MyPaint is too basic, use this one.

Flipbook allows you to create hand-drawn animations with a simple, streamlined experience. It is designed to let you focus on your art. Colors are automatically saved inside the project and can be exported and imported to others. Images can be imported as frames into a project.

InfiniPaint is a collaborative, infinite space, infinite zoom, canvas note-taking/drawing app. Unlike many other infinite canvas apps, although there is a specific zoom-in level limit, there is no zoom-out limit (at least up until the point your computer runs out of memory).

Boats Animator is a free and open-source stop motion animation program for Windows, macOS and Linux. Its intuitive interface caters to animators of all levels and offers many powerful features. The program has been open sourced under the GNU General Public License and...

Meshroom is a free, open-source 3D Reconstruction Software based on the AliceVision Photogrammetric Computer Vision framework.

Wings 3D is a subdivision modeler inspired by Nendo and Mirai from Izware.
It is possible to assign materials, vertex color, UV coordinates and textures, but there will be improvements in those features before Wings goes 1.0.
There is no support in Wings for doing animations.

LeoCAD is a CAD program for creating virtual LEGO models. It has an easy to use interface and currently includes over 6000 different pieces created by the LDraw community.

General 3D CAD software.
I don't really use other commercial alternative, so I cannot properly compare them. But it definitely works for various task, from architecture, machinery, to 3D printing.
Defintiely not a one-to-one SketchUp alternative, as this software has more extensive interface and tools.

LibreCAD is an open source 2D CAD application for Windows, Apple and Linux. It is based on Qt, which is a leading cross-platform application and UI development framework.

These software also suitable as advanced general image gallery, not just photo.
Advanced digital photo management software with features to organize, tag, compare, and process photo collections, supporting multiple formats including RAW.

Powerful cross-platform raw photo processing software offering advanced user control over demosaicing and development. Supports HDR DNGs and image formats.

Open source non-destructive RAW photo editor and image database with lighttable and darkroom views, real-time editing, HDR and scientific image support.

Amazing list !
I discovered some tools that I never heard of and updated my AdobeFree list with some of them !
Very cool list! So many apps I've not heard of before. Some suggestions to add to the list:
Added Shotcut to the list :)
7zip is too general that I don't consider them as creative tool, while OBS is basically de facto standard of screen recording already 🤔
Yeah. That's fair. I guess my rationale is from a screen recording perspective. OBS, while I really like it, can be a tad overkill for the use case of needing a simple and straightforward screen recorder. As someone who records training videos, I've found myself reaching for Kooha on Linux and fornWindows it would be ShareX.
